General Freyherr von Enckenfort (Adrian von Enkevort)

Adrian von Enkefort (born August 20, 1603 in Diest ; † June 3, 1663 in Ledeč nad Sázavou ) was a military leader of the Catholic League in both imperial and Bavarian services.

Life

The son of Oberstwachtmeister Wilhelm von Enkevort, who comes from Brabant and is in Bavarian service, from the old noble family of those von Enckevort (in different historical spellings), also began his military career first in the Bavarian army, but then entered Wallenstein's service and brought it up to the lieutenant colonel . After Wallenstein's death in 1635 he was promoted to colonel and regimental commander. In this role he fought in Alsace against the French and Bernhard von Weimar . The following year he took part in Piccolomini's campaign in the Netherlands and Picardy as sergeant-general and supported Jan van Werth on his forays into France. In 1638 he was captured together with him by Duke Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar in the battle of Rheinfelden and handed over to the French. After three years imprisonment in Paris, he was released in 1641 through a prisoner exchange. He was appointed field marshal in the staff of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm and moved with him to Bohemia and later with General Matthias Gallas down the Elbe and after defeats against the Swedes back to Bohemia. In 1647 he commanded troops in Swabia. In 1648 he became commander in chief of the Bavarian troops. After the end of the war, he was released from Bavarian service in 1649 and went to Vienna . His last military assignment took him to northern Italy in 1656 for two years as commander-in-chief of 6,000 imperial auxiliaries , where Spain and France were still at war.

His biographers describe him as a moderately successful, but experienced and reliable military commander who owes a significant part of his career to his father-in-law, the Imperial Court Chancellor, Count von Verdenberg.

He was married to Anna Camilla (1620–1665) a daughter of the court chancellor Johann Baptist Verda von Verdenberg . The couple had a son:

  • Ferdinand Frans Leopold (1645–1710) ∞ Maria Francesca von Hohenems (* 1650; † February 10, 1705)
