New castle in Neustadt an der Waldnaab

The New Castle is a castle in Neustadt an der Waldnaab . The castle was built in several stages between 1668 and 1720 as the administrative center of the duchy of Störnstein and the seat of the Lobkowitzers .

history

Under Wenzel Eusebius von Lobkowicz , the princes of Neustadt and Störnstein were formed into the Fürstete Grafschaft Störnstein with the main town of Neustadt an der Waldnaab in 1641 . Important for the further development Ferdinand August of Lobkowicz (* September 7, 1655; † October 3, 1715), the eldest son of the Prince from his second marriage with the Evangelical remaining Auguste Sophie von Pfalz-Sulzbach (1624-1682) in Neustadt an der Waldnaab was born. Augusta Sophie still resided in the old castle in Neustadt and in summer in the Waldthurn castle . In 1673, Wenzel Eusebius even appointed his wife Augusta Sophie regent of the counties of Neustadt and Störnstein, "since he was withdrawn from Neustadt (as chief steward of the Privy Council in Vienna) through other businesses". In 1677 their son Ferdinand August Leopold and his wife Claudia Franziska, Princess of Nassau-Hadamar , took over the reign of Neustadt. He decided to rebuild the New Palace in Neustadt based on a plan by Antonio della Porta from 1684. The New Palace was built right next to the Old Palace on Neustädter Stadtplatz. The builder of the New Palace, Prince Ferdinand August Leopold von Lobkowitz, is also a progenitor of the British aristocratic Windsor family and thus the direct ancestor of the reigning Queen Elisabeth II.

Prince Ferdinand August Leopold was married four times. His successor, Phillip Hyacinth von Lobkowitz , born on May 25, 1680 in Neustadt, comes from his first marriage with Claudia Franziska in 1680. Phillip Hyacinth married Eleonore Karoline, the heir to the Lobkowitz-Bilin family, at the age of 23 in 1703. The first marriage remained childless, as the son Ferdinand died when he was born in 1704. In 1707 the princes Lobkowitz Neustadt left and withdrew to their Bohemian estates. Afterwards the castle was used for offices and apartments for the Lobkowitz officials. In 1806 the rule of the Lobkowitzers in Neustadt ended. In 1807 Prince Franz Joseph Maximilian von Lobkowitz sold the Neustadt-Störnstein estate to the Kingdom of Bavaria for 800,000 guilders .

In 1808, Karl Franz Reisner von Lichtenstern was the first Bavarian district judge to move from Parkstein to Neustadt.

Construction

The construction of the New Palace had already been decided in 1684; However, construction was not carried out until 1698. At that time, the architect Antonio della Porta (until 1702) and the princely master builder Anton Ritz (from 1702) began construction according to designs by the Neustadt master builder Johann Leonhard Mayer . The palace was planned as a three-wing complex in the style of an Italian baroque palace , but only the east wing (until 1717) was built. The model was a corner pavilion in the Tuileries of Paris .

Today the castle is a three-storey hipped roof building with a rich facade structure. Late medieval components are included in the castle, while the rear part contains remnants of the city fortifications.

The extensively restored castle (outer facade as well as stucco and ceiling paintings of the interior) is used today as a district office. Parts of the castle are open to the public. For example the castle chapel built around 1710 on the second floor; it was formerly a two-story, square room. In it there is a mirror vault with a 17-part cycle of pictures on the Apostles' Creed . Seven other rooms with ceiling frescoes and stucco depict scenes from Greek mythology; These rooms are publicly accessible as administrative rooms only during guided tours. In the corridor on the 2nd floor there is a permanent exhibition on the history of the castle and the Lobkowitzers and their almost 250-year reign in Neustadt an der Waldnaab and the surrounding area. A small baroque garden is laid out between the back of the castle and the city wall .
