Alfred E. Hierold

Alfred Egid Hierold (born December 29, 1941 in Vohenstrauss ) is a Catholic theologian and canon lawyer . From April 1, 1992 to April 30, 2000 he was rector of the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg .

Life

After graduating from high school, Alfred Hierold studied theology at the University of Regensburg and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . There he met Klaus Mörsdorf for the first time , who inspired him for canon law . After his ordination on June 29, 1967 in Regensburg and a time as a chaplain in Eggenfelden (1967–1968), Hierold obtained a licentiate in canon law (Lic.iur.can) on February 20, 1975 , after which he became a licentiate on February 23, 1978 PhD on the subject of "Foundation and organization of Church Caritas: with special consideration of German particular church law". On April 1, 1980, he began teaching at the Otto Friedrich University in Bamberg , initially as a representative of the retired Othmar Heggelbacher , whom he succeeded on March 1, 1981 as a full professor at the chair for canon law.

There Hierold turned to university politics. On October 1, 1983, he was first dean of the faculty of Catholic theology (until 1985). From March 18, 1989 to September 30, 1991 he was Vice President, from April 1, 1992 to March 31, 2000 rector of the university. His term of office was marked by the further expansion of the institution, which was only raised to university again in 1979. From October 1, 2000 to September 30, 2002 Hierold was again Dean of the Faculty of Catholic Theology. At the Pontifical Philosophical-Theological College Benedict XVI. in Heiligenkreuz he has been teaching canon law as a visiting professor or full professor since 1983.

In addition to the university, Hierold took on other tasks in the field of the Catholic Church: Since February 1, 1983, he has been Vice-Official of the Archdiocese of Bamberg , and since 1985 he has been a member of the Mission Commission of the Archdiocese of Bamberg. Since September 27, 2001 he has been advising Commission XIII of the German Bishops' Conference , which is responsible for Caritas. Since 2001 he has been a member of the Scientific Council of the Catholic Academy in Bavaria . As part of the Bologna Process he has been a member of the Commission of the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education since October 28, 2003 and also advises the German bishops on this matter. He thus combines church and university policy engagement.

From 2002 to 2006 he was chairman of the working group for church law in Germany. Hierold has been a judge at the Church Labor Court (KAGH) in Bonn since July 1, 2005 . Since June 12, 2002 he has been a member of the Commission for Research into Military Pastoral Care and since 2010 a member of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Soldier Pastoral Care . Since 2004 he has been President of the Association of Friends of the Vatican Secret Archives . Since September 16, 2008 he has been the chairman of the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Canonical Study Programs in Germany ( AKAST ).

In addition to many other civic engagements, Hierold has been an honorary member of the Catholic student association KDStV Fredericia Bamberg and the student association Capitolina in Rome since 1995, both in the CV . Until 2016 he was prior of the Bamberg Commandery of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem; Josef Zerndl became his successor. Chairman of the Association of the Friends of the Collegium Oecumenicum (2010), member of the Supervisory Board of the Kolping Educational Institute in the Archdiocese of Bamberg (2010).
