The Route nationale 506 , or N 506 or RN 506 for short , was a French national road from 1933 to 1973 , which ran in two parts from Bonneville to the Swiss border between Chamonix and Martigny. Their total length was 53 kilometers. In 1978 the N205 took over the route between Bonneville and Chamonix under its new leadership. The section to the Swiss border of the N506 existed until 2006. At Col des Montets , the road got a new straighter route in the 1990s. The former route was renumbered to N2506 and downgraded in 2006. Today it is a car park and has the Département street number 2506. In winter, when there is an avalanche risk for the pass road, road traffic is guided through the lower-lying tunnel of the Saint-Gervais – Vallorcine railway line. Between the end of the A40 motorway at Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Chamonix, the road has been developed as an expressway .
