The N586 was a French national road from 1933 to 1973, which ran in two parts between Balsièges and Palavas-les-Flots. Their total length was 166 kilometers. In 1977 the number N586 was assigned for a newly created connection between the A10 and N10 north of Châtellerault. The street has been numbered D161 since 2006.
