The N557 was a French national road from 1933 to 1973, which ran in two parts between the N552 south of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and the N7 southeast of Draguignan. Their total length was 67 kilometers. The short section that interrupted the N562 was part of the old route of the N7 until 1828. In 1978 the section between the N555 and N7 was taken over by the N555 and then graduated in 2006. The stepped route was laid in the area of the Verdon valley because of the damming of the Lac de Sainte-Croix .
