The N540 was a French national road from 1933 to 1973 that ran between the N102 east of Villeneuve-de-Berg and Dieulefit . The section between Montélimar and Dieulefit goes back to the D2 of the Drôme département established in 1813 . The Rhône Bridge from Le Teil was a national road as early as 1885 and was designated as the seventh branch of the N86 . The number N86 K was initially intended for this, before the N540 was finally passed over the bridge. In Le Teil it was interrupted by the N86. Their length was 43 kilometers. In 1978 the section from the junction with the N102 to the N7 in Montélimar was taken over by the N102.
