The N523 was a French national road from 1933 to 1973 that ran between Grenoble and Montmélian. Their length was 47.5 kilometers. It represented an alternative to the N90 between Grenoble and the N6, which ran parallel on the other side of the Isère. From 1985 to 2006 the arterial road from Grenoble, on which the N523 ran, was again national road with the number N2087 as a side branch of the N87 up to the Rocade de Grenoble.
