Stafford studied at Cambridge University with a bachelor's degree in 1972 and a master's degree in 1976 and received his doctorate in 1976 from the University of Leeds with James Christopher Robson ( Stable Structure of Noncommutative Noetherian Rings ). From 1976 to 1989 he was a NATO Research Fellow at Brandeis University and from 1978 to 1982 he was a Research Fellow at Gaius and Gonville College, Cambridge. In 1982 he was Lecturer , 1985 Reader and 1988 Professor at the University of Leeds and 1989 Professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . From 2007 he is a professor at Manchester University.

Stafford is concerned with non-commutative algebraic geometry . With Artin and Stafford he classified non-commutative projective curves , that is, non-commutative graded rings with quadratic growth (Gelfand-Kirillov dimension 2). The classification of non-commutative surfaces (non-commutative graded rings with cubic growth) is an open problem in which Stafford works. Stafford also deals with rings of differential operators, for example Weyl algebras, and Cherednik algebras.

Stafford is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (2013). In 2007 he received the Wolfson Merit Research Award from the Royal Society and in 1980 the Whitehead Prize . In 2002 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing (Noncommutative Projective Geometry).

From 1988 he was editor of the Journal of Algebra, 1993 to 1996 on the editorial board of Contemporary Mathematics and 1987 to 1998 he was on the editorial board of the London Mathematical Society.

Daniel Rogalski is one of his PhD students .
