La Thuile is an Italian commune in the autonomous region of Aosta Valley . The community has 797 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The inhabitants are called Thuileins .

The community lies at an average altitude of 1450  m slm . Their area has a size of 125 km².

The Thuile settlement consists of the districts Buic, Thovex, Moulin, Villaret, Bathieu, Entrèves, Petite Golette, Grande Golette, Pont Serrand, Arly, Les Granges, La Joux, Pierre-carrée, Preyllon, Les Suches, Petit-Saint-Bernard , Petosan, Faubourg and Preylet.

The neighboring municipalities are Arvier , Avise , Bourg-Saint-Maurice (France), Courmayeur , La Salle , Montvalezan (France), Morgex , Pré-Saint-Didier , Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise (France), Séez (France) and Valgrisenche .

The appearance of La Thuile is shaped by the glaciers of the Rutor , whose waterfalls are the most powerful in the Alps. Following the falls, you can reach the Deffeyes refuge within 2½ hours .

history

La Thuile is located on the historically important road of the Little Saint Bernard Pass between the Mont Blanc massif and the French Tarentaise . At the top of the pass lies the prehistoric stone circle of the Little Saint Bernard .

The parish church of St. Nicholas was mentioned in papal documents from the 12th century.

During the time of fascism the place was called Porta Littoria from 1939 and was renamed again in 1946.

ski

In winter, La Thuile has been connected to the Savoy community of La Rosière since 1984 via the Little Saint Bernard , the Belvedere chairlift on the Aosta Valley side and the Chardonnet and Bellecombe ski lifts on the French side. This connection opens up a common ski area for skiers - the Espace Saint-Bernard - of 3000 hectares with 150 km of slopes, which are now served by 38 ski lifts. The La Thuile ski area has 92 km of slopes.
