The Testa del Rutor , French (la) Tête du Ruitor (often also simply (der) le Rutor ), is a 3486  m high mountain in the Graian Alps in the Italian autonomous region with a special status Aosta Valley in the western Alps of Italy.

topography

The Pinnacle is located south of the Mont Blanc massif in the southeast of the pass of the Little St. Bernard Pass across the national border between Italy and France - but entirely on the territory of Italy, on the territory of the municipalities of Valgrisenche to the east and below this mountain pass located La Thuile northwest. To the southwest, the mountain stands above the French commune of Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise ( Savoy department ) in the upper Isère valley ( Tarentaise ).

The massif of the summit, the Rutor group (Rutor-Léchaud chain), is combined to form a mountain group according to SOIUSA with the Aiguille de la Grande Sassière to the south , which it. Alpi della Grande Sassière e del Rutor or French Alpes de la Grande Sassière et du Rutor - Central Graian Alps, which is bordered by the three valleys of the Isère Valley, the Valgrisenche Valley and the La Thuile Valley. It lies in the area between the mountains in the west of the Aosta Valley and those in its south, south of the Aosta Valley, around the mountain range of Gran Paradiso (French: Grand Paradis ). The Rutor forms, as the west pillar this north slope of Paradiso group, which is crossed by four valleys for Doire Baltée and Po drain out: (from west to east) the Valgrisenchetal, the Rhêmes -Tal, the Valsavarenchetal and Cogne . The Valgrisenche valley east of the Rutor is the western neighboring valley of the Rhêmes valley, which forms the western border of the Gran Paradiso National Park .

The massif carries the largest glaciers in the Aosta Valley region. On the mountain slope of La Thuile is the Rutor Glacier (it. Ghiacciaio del Rutor , French. Glacier du Rutor ), towards Valgrisenche the Morion Glacier (it. Ghiacciaio di Morion , French. Glacier du Morion ) extends .

The etymology of the name is uncertain: a contraction of the word stems roése (glacier) and tor (rocky ridge) from Arpitan , the “ patois ” of the Aosta Valley and Savoy, is considered to be likely .

Alpinism

The normal route leads from the district of La Joux in the municipality of La Thuile past the Rutor Falls to the Rifugio Alberto Deffeyes ( 2494  m ) and from there over the Rutor Glacier and Rutor Pass (Italian: Colle del Rutor , French Col du Rutor , 3373  m ). From the pass you climb up along the summit ridge. There is an alternative route from Valgrisenche from the Bonne district right next to the Beauregardsee dam . From there you climb up to the Rifugio degli Angeli al Morion , from the mountain hut following the path on the Morion glacier you reach the Rutorpass and the summit ridge.

Seven people died in January 2019 when a helicopter collided with a Jodel D140 .
