The Jodel D140 is a light aircraft produced by the French manufacturer SAN . As a further development of the D117 , the D140 with its design as a cantilever low wing aircraft , fabric-covered gull wing wings made of wood and a tail wheel chassis has a typical appearance for yodel constructions. The aircraft was given the nickname "Mousquetaire" (Eng .: Musketeer ) by the manufacturer because it has a very powerful four-cylinder Lycoming engine of the types O-360 A1A, O-360 A2A or IO-360 B2F6 in relation to its low empty weight 180 hp.

Versions

The following versions have been built:

  • D140 "Mousquetaire": initial version with triangular vertical stabilizer
  • D140A "Mousquetaire": improved engine ventilation
  • D140B "Mousquetaire II": improved braking and cowling
  • D140C "Mousquetaire III": enlarged square vertical stabilizer
  • D140E "Abeille": further enlarged vertical stabilizer and modified glazing with better all-round visibility
  • D140R "Remorqueur": device for glider towing and modified rear part of the fuselage.

construction

The Mousquetaire has a spacious passenger cabin with four or five seats and a large luggage compartment with a wide door behind the passenger cabin. Both the doors to the cabin and to the luggage compartment are opened upwards - according to yodelling tradition. Thanks to the 180 hp engine, the aircraft has excellent travel characteristics. The machine takes off after just 270 meters of taxiing and has already reached an altitude of 15 meters after another 400 meters. The luggage compartment is so large that after removing the rear bench seat and the partition between the luggage compartment and the passenger cabin, even a person can be transported lying down, e.g. B. with an ambulance . The D140R can take as much payload as its own curb weight , which is very rare in single-engine aircraft. The two fuel tanks hold a total of 210 liters and allow an operating range of around 1200 kilometers. A third tank with a capacity of 45 liters could be ordered as additional equipment in the front luggage compartment, which increases the operating range even further. The fuel supply of then a total of 255 liters allows a flyable autonomy of a maximum of 7 hours plus 20 minutes reserve .

use

The first approved prototype ( aircraft registration F-BIZE) was flown by Lucien Querey on July 8, 1958. A total of 195 machines were produced from 1958 to 1966. The French military used many of the aircraft for training purposes and as liaison and medical aircraft. The kit, which is also offered, could be assembled into an approved amateur building (so-called home-builts) in around 3500 working hours. How many machines were created in this way is not known.

The Mousquetaire was used by the French army as an air tug for flight targets or by air sports clubs as a tow plane for gliders . At the end of 1964, a colonel in the French troops asked him to design an aircraft that was better adapted for this particular use of towing. So in 1965 the variant D 140 "Abeille" (the " bee ") was created. The D 140 “Abeille” is characterized by its lower weight, a flatter passenger cabin with improved all-round visibility and the elimination of the extensive luggage compartment. The "Abeille", which was only produced in 22 copies, is often flown in the mountains thanks to its clear layout and very good rate of climb . As an option, the D140 could also be equipped with runners on the main landing gear for snow-covered runways .
