Robert Berton

Robert-Joseph Berton (born January 14, 1909 in Aosta ; † June 15, 1998 there ) was an Italian historian , monument conservator and folklorist .

Life

Robert Berton was born in Aosta to the merchant Jean-Dominique Berton and Giulia Venturin. He studied at the Foro Italico University Sports College in Rome and was involved in youth sports. He later worked as a municipal employee in Aosta and was given the job of a voluntary monument conservator at an early age. He also worked for the Comité des traditions valdôtaines and the Académie Saint-Anselme .

He campaigned for the research and preservation of the regional cultural heritage and especially for the protection of the traditional cityscape of Aosta and published fundamental works mainly on the architectural history of the Aosta Valley. He wrote his works in French, the second official language of the Autonomous Region of Aosta Valley, and only a few have been translated into Italian. He also used photographs , films and drawings by various artists in the monument preservation mediation that was innovative for the time . In the municipality of La Thuile on the road to the Little St. Bernard Pass, he set up a museum for the traditional folk culture of the Aosta Valley.

Since 1970 he has devoted several studies to the personal names and field names of some communities in the Aosta Valley.

After the Second World War , Robert Berton was one of the founders of the autonomous political party Union Valdôtaine .
