Dora Baltea near Ivrea (2005).

The Dora Baltea at Ivrea (2005).

The Dora Baltea , French Doire Baltée , is a river in the Aosta Valley in the western Italian Alps .

River course

The Dora Baltea arises in the district of Entrèves above Courmayeur from a union of the two meltwater streams Doire de Ferret (from the Val Ferret ) and Doire de Vény (from the Val Veny ). The Doire de Ferret rises from the Glacier de Pré de Bar , the Doire de Véni from the marshland of Combal and the Miage glacier . Both are glaciers on Italy's southeast side of the Mont Blanc massif.

On its way to the Po, the Dora Baltea flows eastwards through the entire Aosta Valley, bends to the southeast behind Saint-Vincent , breaks through the Montjovet valley and, after leaving the valley , reaches Piedmont with the town of Ivrea . From there to the confluence with the Po, it accompanies the Canavese region . After 160 km the river flows into the Po at Crescentino .
