Bionaz (in the Franco-Provencal dialect "Patois" and in French the place is pronounced without Z: Biona ) is an Italian commune in the autonomous region of Aosta Valley . The community has 223 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), is located on the orographic left side of the Dora Baltea at an average altitude of 1606 m above sea level. NN and has a size of 140 km².
Bionaz consists of the districts (French hameaux ) Balmes, Chamin, Chentre, Chez Badin, Chez Chenoux, Chez les Merloz, Chez Noyer, Clou Neuf, Crêtes, Dzovennoz, La Ferrère, La Léchère, La Quellod, Lexert, Ley, Lo Vianoz, Moulin, Perquis, Places, Plan de Veyne (chef-lieu), Pouillayes, Prarayer, Propère, Rey, Rû, Vagère.
The neighboring municipalities are Bagnes (Switzerland), Evolène (Switzerland), Nus , Ollomont , Oyace , Torgnon , Valtournenche and Zermatt (Switzerland).
At the end of the high valley of Bionaz-Valpelline there is a reservoir at 1,900 m, called Place Moulin , and then the Prarayer alpine pasture with the Rifugio Prarayer mountain inn at 2,005 m. From the hamlet of Rùz you can climb to the Rifugio Crête Sèche refuge within 2 hours .
