Evolène [ ɛvɔlɛnə̯ ] (also Evolena , in the native Franco-Provencal patois : [ (ew) ɔˈlɛ̃iŋna ]) is a village, a political municipality and a civic parish in the Hérens district in the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland .
history
The municipality was formed in 1882 by the municipality of separation of Hérens in Evolene and Saint-Martin VS .
On February 21, 1999, the Evolène avalanche accident occurred in which 12 people died.
geography
The municipality extends from the upper part of the Val d'Hérens to the Italian border. The Borgne flows in the valley . The municipality reaches its highest point at the summit of the 4,357 m high Dent Blanche .
The districts Evolène , Lannaz , Les Haudères , La Sage / Villa (z) , La Forclaz , Arolla and Ferpècle belong to the municipality .
The neighboring Swiss municipalities are clockwise (starting in the southwest): Bagnes , Hérémence , Saint-Martin VS, Grimentz , Ayer and Zermatt . In the south the municipality borders on Italy .
The main road 206 coming from Sion leads via Evolène to its end point, the district of Les Haudères. Evolène is on the Sitten – Evolène – Les Haudères post bus line .

Evolène is one of the few communities in French-speaking Switzerland where a patois, Arpitan , is still spoken.
Attractions
On the Alpage de Cotter above Evolène there are several prehistoric shell stones , including the Pierre aux Immolés ( stone of the sacrificed ).
