Hérémence , formerly German Armensi or Ermenz, is a political municipality and a civil parish in the district of Hérens in the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland . The municipality is known for the Lac des Dix reservoir and its huge Grande-Dixence dam .
geography
The municipality is located in the Val d'Hérémence valley of the same name . The neighboring municipalities starting from the north in a clockwise direction are Vex , Saint-Martin , Evolène , Bagnes and Nendaz .
history
Hérémence was first mentioned in 1195 as Aremens . After the place had belonged to Savoy for a long time , it was transferred to the diocese of Sion in 1260 . In 1268 it moved back to Savoy, where the entire Val d'Hérémence remained until 1476. This is in contrast to the Val d'Hérens .

Attractions
The Catholic parish church ( St. Nicolas (Hérémence) ) is a monumental concrete building by the architect Walter Maria Förderer , built between 1967 and 1970. Controversial at the time of its construction, it is now considered to be an important architectural and historical church building of the 20th century in Switzerland.
