The Rifugio Ottorino Mezzalama is a refuge in the Aosta Valley in the Valais Alps . It is located at an altitude of 3,036 m in the Valle d'Ayas side valley near the Ghiacciaio di Verra glacier within the municipality of Ayas . The hut is open from the beginning of July to the end of September and offers sleeping places for 36 mountaineers during this time.
Ascent
From Saint-Jacques, a district of Ayas, you reach the town of Blanchard , which is located at the confluence of the source streams of the mountain stream Evançon , Verra and Courtod. Behind the bridge begins the path that leads up to the valley of the Verra stream. After reaching the hamlet of Fiery , the path splits; follow it on the right to the Pian di Verra Inferiore plain ( 2050 m ). A gravel path leads to the beginning of the Pian di Verra Superiore alpine pasture . Below the alpine pasture, follow the path to the left, which climbs up a steep, grassy slope. After crossing a plateau up to the ridge of a moraine, follow it to the hut. In winter, you often climb next to the moraine and only at the end of the moraine climb over a steep slope to the hut, the height of which is often given as 3004 m.
The refuge can be reached in 4-5 hours from the hamlet of Saint-Jacques.
history
The refuge in its current appearance was inaugurated in 1934 and was last thoroughly renovated in 1987. It was dedicated to Ottorino Mezzalama (1888–1931), a mountaineer from Turin who was killed by an avalanche on the Ghiacciaio di Malavalle glacier near Bardonecchia .
