The Theodulhütte ( Italian Rifugio del Teodulo ; French Refuge du Théodule ) is located on the border between Italy and Switzerland at 3317  m slm north of the Theodul Pass and only a few meters below the mountain station of the Bontadini lift .

It is run by the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) and is open in summer from June to September. Due to its proximity to the Zermatt - Breuil-Cervinia ski area , the hut is also open in winter. With 60 beds (5 of them as winter storage) it is an important starting point for mountain tours in the Monte Rosa area , on the Breithorn and on the Little Matterhorn .

history

The first refuge was built in 1852 on the remains of an old fortress that Duke Viktor Amadeus II had built on the top of the pass in 1688 . At the end of the 18th century, the naturalist Horace-Bénédict de Saussure used a simple stone hut for his observations that had been made on the same site. The first small refuge was created from the building materials from these two previous buildings.

In 1864 and 1865 the glaciologist Daniel Dollfus-Ausset stayed for a long time in the hut to observe glaciers and meteorology. In 1891 the refuge was extended for the first time. In 1915 she acquired the Turin section of the CAI. In 1920 the section began construction of the current building, which was completed in 1926. The four-storey building had 67 beds and at that time was still called Rifugio Principe di Piemonte .

Extensive renovation work took place between 2000 and 2010, during which the Theodulhütte was enlarged.
