The Bontadini lift is a chair lift for skiers and is located east of the northern Italian city of Breuil-Cervinia . Its mountain station in front of the Col de Sommeiller is the highest point in the Alps that can be reached by two-lane vehicles. The installed lift system comes from the Leitner company , overcomes a height difference of 292 m compared to the valley station, has a length of 1131 m and with its two 220 kW motors transports up to 2400 people per hour at up to 5 meters per second .

Driving distance to the Bontadini lift

The approach to the mountain station (difficulty level 5 ) is only possible with off-road vehicles (not with cars) and only in a very narrow time window in the year between the thawing of the old snow and the first fresh snow. The ascent starts from Breuil-Cervinia and stretches along several cable car routes through an impassable rock and scree landscape. In the upper part there are some steep, unsecured serpentines in the rough scree as well as a last very steep driveway to the Theodulhütte - these passages represent the actual key point of the drive.

In 2009, the route was closed to motor vehicles by the competent authority in Breuil-Cervinia. The closure took place on the basis of the regional law of April 22, 1985, No. 17. However, there are special permits for certain events.
