The Sam Ratulangi International Airport ( Indonesian Bandara Internasional Sam Ratulangi , IATA : MDC , ICAO : WAMM ) is the airport of Manado , the provincial capital of North Sulawesi . It is located about thirteen km northeast of downtown Manado and is named after the politician Sam Ratulangi from the local Minahasa people . The airport is the gateway for tourists to the world-famous diving paradise in the surrounding region, which is why it has international routes.

On the south-western side of the airport area is the reception building with the driveways and parking lots; on the eastern side the only runway extends north-south. A taxiway runs along the entire length of this runway , which is connected to the runway by four vertical taxiways . This taxiway connects the runway with the airport apron , on which there is space for 18 aircraft, for example 2 wide-body aircraft of size DC-10 , ten narrow-body aircraft of size B737 and six small transporters of type C-212 . There are two boarding bridges , one single and one double. Up to three aircraft can be handled here if two smaller aircraft share the two “fingers” of the double bridge.

The new passenger handling building is located on the south-western edge of the airport. It was opened in 2001 and is designed for a capacity of two million passengers per year. The passenger building is divided into an international area and a domestic area. It is equipped with thirteen check-in counters , three baggage claim belts and five piers ( “gates” ).

300 short-term parking spaces are available in the parking lot in front of the passenger building.

As part of the modernization of the airport, a new control tower was also built and the taxiway system and runway were expanded and renewed.

There is a hangar to the south of the apron , and another part of the airport is reserved for the Indonesian military. Halfway along the runway, the is about guard the airport fire brigade .

In the area of the former terminal building, a 2280 m² cargo terminal was built. This can handle up to 7,840 tons of freight per year.
