Léon Daudet

Léon Daudet (born November 16, 1867 in Paris , † June 30, 1942 in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence ) was a French writer . His numerous novels were unsuccessful, but he achieved greater fame as a political publicist and pamphletist , who went down in the history of the Third Republic primarily as an anti-Semite and a German hater. Today it is only known to historians in France. In Germany, despite his importance as an anti-German propagandist, which can hardly be underestimated, he seems almost unknown.

Life

Léon Daudet was the eldest son of Alphonse Daudet , a successful storyteller and playwright who is still valued today. His uncle Ernest and his brother Lucien were also writers, but they are now forgotten. In 1891 he married Jeanne Hugo, a granddaughter of Victor Hugo ; the marriage was divorced in 1895.

During the " Dreyfus Affair " Daudet was an active "anti-Dreyfusard" and supporter of political agitators such as Édouard Drumont . With Charles Maurras , he was a founding member of Action française , a political movement that represented monarchist , nationalist and anti-Semitic positions.
