Hans Ost

Hans Ost (born October 17, 1937 ) is a German art historian .

He studied art history, archeology, philosophy and literary studies in Munich, Zurich and Bonn, where he received his doctorate in 1965 with a dissertation on 19th century German painting. Years of assistant and scholarship followed in Tübingen and at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome. In 1972 he received his habilitation in Bonn with a thesis on Leonardo da Vinci . 1973 Ost became professor for art history at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . Since 1976 he has been a professor at the University of Cologne .

His main research interests are Italian and Flemish modern painting. Hans Ost became known to a wider public through his publication of the alleged forgery of Leonardo's self-portrait in Turin . He is considered a renowned Renaissance forger researcher.
