Fabian Weinhandl (born January 3, 1987 in Graz ) is an Austrian ice hockey goalkeeper who was most recently under contract with EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian EBEL .

Career

Weinhandl began his career in the various junior teams of the Graz 99ers and was a substitute goalkeeper in the Bundesliga team for the first time in the 2003/04 season. Until his first appearance, however, it was not until September 24, 2006, when he replaced Steve Passmore in the second game of the 99ers after 40 minutes and allowed only one hit in 21 minutes and blocked eleven shots. Due to the fluctuating performance of the first goalies - Passmore was replaced after some time first by Pavel Nešťák and later by Walter Bartholomäus - he also came to some missions and was able to achieve his first shutout on March 2, 2007 against the EC VSV .

In the following season Weinhandl moved to North America to the Bay State Breakers in the Eastern Junior Hockey League , but only came to five missions in which he could not convince. Weinhandl returned to the 99ers in the following season and subsequently presented himself as a solid backup goalkeeper. His preliminary breakthrough came in the 2009/10 season when Sébastien Charpentier injured himself in the first game after forty minutes and he had to fill the position of first goalkeeper for the following games. Thanks also to a strong defense, he played his way to the top of the goalkeeping statistics and held the position for a few games after Charpentier's return. As a result, he was elected EBEL YoungStar of the Month in September 2009 . He retained the status of 1st goalkeeper in the 2010/11 season and was the first goalkeeper in EBEL history to complete a complete season including the playoffs alone, i.e. without the support of a backup goalkeeper. His team received the fewest goals in the regular season.

For the 2012/13 season, Weinhandl moved to the Vienna Capitals and subsequently played 25 games for the club. He then received a contract with the EC KAC . In December 2014 he was the Italian club Ritten Sport from the Serie A on loan. He won the Coppa Italia with the South Tyroleans . In Serie A he achieved the lowest goalscoring and the best catch rate of all goalkeepers and thus contributed significantly to the runner-up title of his club. Weinhandl returned to Austria at the end of May 2015 and received a one-year contract with EC Red Bull Salzburg .

International

In the junior division, Weinhandl took part in the U18 World Championship 2005 and the U20 World Championship 2007 for Austria in Division I.

He made his debut in the men's selection on February 12, 2010 in the 0-1 defeat after a shootout against Italy in Asiago . He played for Austria at the 2011 World Cup in the top division, when the team had to relegate, and a year later in Division I, when the direct promotion succeeded. In addition, he was part of the alpine team at the qualifying tournament for the 2014 Winter Olympics , but did not play a role.
