The Rudi Hiti Summer Cup ( often referred to as the poletna liga in Slovenian ) is a preparation tournament for ice hockey teams that has been held annually in Bled , Slovenia since 1992 at the end of August . The event in 2001 caused a sensation, in which the traditional Russian club HK CSKA Moscow also took part and won the tournament. The most successful team in the tournament is the Austrian first division club EC KAC with five wins so far. The tournament is named after the former Slovenian ice hockey player Rudi Hiti , who enjoyed great success in the 1970s and 1980s.
The venue is the Bled ice rink ( Hokejska dvorana Bled in Slovenian ), which holds 1,736 spectators. Due to the very summery weather at that time, the tournament is usually accompanied by barbecues and smaller events, which is why it is also a popular season opener for fans.
At its premiere, the tournament was played with four teams. Each team played against each other once. The winner was the French participant Diables Rouges de Briançon , who could win all three games.
For the event in August 2008, the field of participants was expanded from four to six teams, so that initially two groups of three teams each were played. The two group runners-up then played a game for third place, the group winners played for the tournament victory. After a hard-fought game, it just went to the EC VSV .
In 2009 there were six participants at the start, but instead of the EHC Linz, the Swiss second division SC Langenthal took part in the tournament. The game was played in two groups again. This was followed by the placement games between the respective group first, second and third. The winner of the tournament was HK Jesenice before the Diables Rouges de Briançon . The defending champion EC VSV only achieved fifth place.
In 2010 the tournament will be played with four teams in a single group. Originally defending champion Briançon should have started again, but the club had to withdraw the already made commitment due to financial problems. The Hungarian club Budapest Stars was brought on board as a replacement .
