Matt Tomassoni played inline hockey as a child and started ice hockey at the age of eleven. Until 2006 he ran in different age groups for Chicago Mission , whose junior teams with the classification Tier 1 AAA correspond to the highest level of the age groups Squirt (9-10 years) to Midget Major (15-18 years). In the USHL Entry Draft 2006 he was selected in the sixth round in 71st place by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. In August 2006, the defender played with the US U18 national team at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Břeclav and reached the final, which was lost 3-0 against Canada .
In the 2006/07 season he made his debut in the United States Hockey League and reached the second round of the playoffs with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders . During the next season Tomassoni was invited to the USHL All-Star Game because of his shown performances. With his team, however, he was defeated in the first round of the playoffs. For the 2008/09 season he began studying political science as a major at Miami University and played for the local ice hockey team, the Miami RedHawks . In his freshman year, his team made it to the finals of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's college championship . There they lost to Boston University 3: 4 after extra time. The next year Tomassoni and his team finished the regular season as the best points team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association . In the playoffs, however, they were eliminated in the semifinals. In the 2010/11 season, the defender contributed six goals and nine assists to winning the championship of the CCHA. Tomassoni played predominantly as a striker in his senior year, having previously gained experience in that position. After leaving the playoffs, the American signed a contract with Chicago Express on March 28, 2012 and made his professional debut in the ECHL .
On July 24, 2012 Tomassoni signed a four-week trial contract with the Iserlohn Roosters from the German Ice Hockey League . There he met head coach Doug Mason , who had spotted him for a long time, as his son had also played for Miami University for three years. One day before the first day of play, the Roosters extended the contract with the 23-year-old until the end of the season. Tomassoni made a decisive contribution to the following 5: 3 away win for Iserlohn at Düsseldorfer EG with an underpaid goal and an assist. In the further course he showed good performance both on the offensive and defensive and developed into the top performer of the Roosters. In the summer of 2013, he moved to Italy, where he signed for HC Bozen , newcomer to Erste Bank Eishockey Liga .
Between 2014 and 2017 he was active in the second German division, the DEL2 : first with the Kassel Huskies and then for two years with the Löwen Frankfurt . In June 2017 he returned to HC Bozen.
