Benoît Jacques Joseph Gratton (born December 28, 1976 in Montreal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who has worked for the Washington Capitals , Calgary Flames and Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League , the Hamburg Freezers in the DEL as well as for the Vienna Capitals in the Austrian Bundesliga .
Career
The 1.80 m tall striker began his career in 1993 with the Titan de Laval in the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec , for which he was on the ice for three seasons. During the 1995 NHL Entry Draft , Gratton was selected by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round in a total of 105th position.
For the 1996/97 season he played 76 games for the Portland Pirates in the American Hockey League , the then farm team of the Capitals, in which he scored 46 points. The sturdy left-handed shooter then got the chance to prove himself in the National Hockey League . The Capitals used it in a total of six games. He could not prevail, however, and continued to play predominantly in the AHL in the following years.
In the summer of 1999, Gratton joined the Calgary Flames as a free agent . There he stayed for two years and completed 24 NHL games, in which he scored six points. After another engagement with the Canadiens de Montréal , Gratton had little hope of a regular place in the NHL and in 2004 ultimately decided to move to the National League A to HC Lugano . There Gratton was able to convince and signed a contract with the Hamburg Freezers from the German Ice Hockey League after one season . In his first season in Hamburg he was one of the best scorers in the team and one of the top performers. In the years that followed, his performance waned and the Freezers management did not renew his contract.
Then Gratton joined the Vienna Capitals in the Austrian Bundesliga, for which he went on the ice from the 2008/09 season . On November 26, 2014, the Vienna Capitals announced that Gratton would have to undergo an operation that would also mean his departure from the Viennese; However, he still left open an official career end. In June 2015, the Canadian signed a contract with Marquis de Jonquière from Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey .
