from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian Freeling (born February 1, 1947 in Enschede ) is a Dutch game designer .

In addition to his work as a math teacher, Freeling began to deal with games and their rules. He was less interested in creating new types of games than in editing and improving the rules of tried and tested games.

His best-known game is the connection game Havannah , which was published by Ravensburger and was shortlisted for Game of the Year in both 1981 and 1982 . The game Grand Chess (also known as large chess ) is an adaptation of a chess variant invented by the world champion Capablanca . Freeling's version achieved the status of a recognized variant at chessvariants.com , something that only about 25 out of many thousands have achieved.

Among the games that Freeling has developed are Emergo (together with Ed van Zon), a further development of the game Laska - a checkers variant from the world chess champion Lasker - and Dameo, also a variant of the checkers game . Freeling's son Demian invented the chess variant Congo at the age of seven , which is featured on the cover of David Pritchard's book The Encyclopedia of Chess Variants .

In addition to his occupation as a game designer, Freeling devotes himself to breeding raccoon dogs .
