David Pritchard (Author)

David Brine Pritchard (born October 19, 1919 - December 12, 2005 in London ) was a British chess player , chess author and consultant for indoor games. His books, which have sold thousands of times around the world, are mostly about chess, but also about other board and mind games . His best-known book is "The Encyclopedia of Chess Variants", which contains over 1400 different chess variants. He was director of the Mind Sports Organization and President of the British Chess Variants Society.

biography

During and after World War II , Pritchard was a Royal Air Force pilot . In 1954 and 1955 he won the chess championships in Singapore and Malaysia . During his chess career he celebrated victories against the British chess legends Jonathan Penrose and Tony Miles . In England he won many regional tournaments. In 1952 he married the British chess master Elaine Saunders (1926–2012) and had a daughter with her. At the time of his death he had five grandchildren.
