Derek Dorsett (born December 20, 1986 in Kindersley , Saskatchewan ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The right winger played over 500 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets , New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League before retiring for health reasons.
Career
Derek Dorsett began his career as a hockey player with the Medicine Hat Tigers , for which he was active from 2004 to 2007 in the Western Hockey League , and with whom he won the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL champions in the 2006/07 season . During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the seventh round as a total of 189 players of the Columbus Blue Jackets . After the winger was used exclusively for their farm team , Syracuse Crunch from the American Hockey League , in the 2007/08 season , he scored five scorer points in the regular season for the Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League the following year . He was also on the ice in three games in the Blue Jackets' first playoff participation.
For the trade deadline on April 3, 2013, he was transferred to the New York Rangers . After a year in New York and reaching the Stanley Cup final, the Rangers gave him to the Vancouver Canucks in June 2014 and in return received a third-round vote for the 2014 NHL Entry Draft .
The striker was an integral part of the regular NHL squad for the next two years and played 150 of 164 possible games during this period. In the 2016/17 season , Dorsett only played 14 games because he had to undergo surgery for a herniated disc in the area of the cervical spine . At the beginning of the 2017/18 season , the attacker returned to the ice, but complaints arose again, so that he ended his active career on the advice of his doctors in November 2017 at the age of 30. In total, he had completed 558 games in ten seasons, collecting 129 scorer points and 1,383 penalty minutes.
