Giant Chincherinchee ( Ornithogalum saundersiae ) is a plant from the family of asparagus plants (Asparagaceae).
description
Giant chincherinchee is a perennial , herbaceous bulbous plant that usually reaches heights of 30 to 100 (150) centimeters. The leaves measure 60 × 5 centimeters and are less than half the length of the stem . The upper side of the leaf has a dark green sheen. The inflorescence consists of numerous flowers and is flat conical. The flower stalks are long. The tepals are white, 10 to 15 millimeters long and preserved and bent back at the fruiting time. The ovary is black-green.
The flowering period extends from June to August.
Occurrence
Giant chincherinchee occurs in South Africa in the Eastern Transvaal, Natal, Swaziland and Zululand in rocky clearings.
