Jonathan Insana (born September 2, 1980 in Mount Clemens , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has played for the Vienna Capitals in the Austrian ice hockey league since July 2011 .

Career

Jon Insana started ice hockey at the age of five, started his career in 1997 and spent a year in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League and the North American Hockey League . He then studied for four years at Michigan State University and was also active for the local ice hockey team during this time. In 1999 and 2001, Insana won the Central Collegiate Hockey Association championship with his team .

Since the defensively aligned defender had not been considered in the NHL Entry Draft , he received his first professional contract with the Trenton Titans from the third-rate East Coast Hockey League . Nevertheless, he got invitations to the training camps and played some preparatory games for the NHL clubs. A broken leg, however, prevented his further path to the best league in the world. For the first four years, Insana played mainly in the ECHL for the Florida Everblades and in the United Hockey League for the Muskegon Fury . With the Everblades he reached the final series of the Kelly Cup in 2004 , which however was lost to the Idaho Steelheads . In 2005 the American won his first professional ice hockey championship with the Fury. By 2006 he also played a total of 24 games in the American Hockey League . His teams were the Manchester Monarchs , Lowell Lock Monsters , Grand Rapids Griffins and the Cleveland Barons . In the 2006/07 season , Insana first spent most of the year in the AHL at Grand Rapids Griffins, for which he also completed the next season completely. In 2008 he joined the Houston Eros and then moved to the Chicago Wolves .

For the 2009/10 season he signed with the Iserlohn Roosters from the German Ice Hockey League , as his playing times in North America were not satisfactory. Insana was able to quickly switch to the larger ice surface and prove his shooting quality with five hits in the first half of the season. On January 5, 2010, he injured his shoulder in the game against the Kassel Huskies and was out for twelve games. When he returned to the team, Insana scored his sixth goal of the season against the Krefeld Pinguine . During the injury break, the Roosters held the first contract talks to extend the contract with the American prematurely. On February 26, 2010, Insana signed a contract for two more years.

On July 2, 2011, Insana signed a contract with Vienna Capitals from the Austrian ice hockey league . In the 2012-2013 season he moved to league newcomer HC Innsbruck.
