List of personalities from the city of Hemer
This list contains personalities from the city of Hemer who deserve special mention for their services.
Dear citizens
Honorary citizen
Ruth and Friedrich Grohe were made honorary citizens on December 10, 1974 at the last council meeting of the city of Hemer before the municipal reorganization . The couple made the Grohe company into a leading company in the bathroom fittings sector. In gratitude for their honorary citizenship, the Grohe couple donated the Christopherus Fountain for Hademareplatz in the city center to the city. The fountain has now moved to Grohe-Platz below the town hall. A street in the city center was also named after Friedrich Grohe.
On January 30, 1936, on the occasion of Hemer's town elevation, Adolf Hitler became an honorary citizen. In 1995 the city council dealt with the issue. He did not revoke honorary citizenship, but distanced himself from the decision at that time and took the position that honorary citizenship had expired with death. After a new discussion about honorary citizenship arose in the course of the 75th anniversary of the city of Hemer, the council unanimously approved a motion by the SPD parliamentary group on March 29, 2011 to revoke Hitler's title of honorary citizen.
Until 1975, every municipality in the Hemer district had the right to appoint its own honorary citizens. For example, as a long-time member of the municipal and official assembly in 1953, Friedrich Ludwig received the honorary citizenship in Ihmert. The Protestant pastor Karl Thom was also granted honorary citizenship of the Ihmert congregation on February 28, 1961, primarily for his services to cultural work.

mayor
Acting full-time mayor Hemers has been Michael Heilmann (formerly UWG, since April 2018 non-party) since February 14, 2016 . He is the successor to Michael Esken ( CDU ), who has been in office since 2003 and was confirmed in his office in the 2009 local elections with around 76 percent of the vote.
Since the city charter was granted in 1936, Hemer has had 15 different mayors, with Josef Kleffner and Hans Meyer (both CDU) each coming into office a second time after an interruption. Hans Meyer is also the mayor with the longest term of office, he was in office from 1969 to 1987 - only interrupted by the municipal reorganization in January 1975, when Werner Beckmann ( FDP ) took over the mayor's duties for three weeks as a result of the municipal reorganization . With Hermann Arendt , Fredi Camminadi (both SPD) and Hans Meyer, three former officials bear the title of former mayor . Between 1946 and 1994 it was not the mayor but a city director who was the head of the city administration. Of the four Hemeraner city directors at this time, Dieter Voss had the longest term of office; he held this position between 1966 and 1990.
Until the municipal reorganization in 1975, each municipality in the Hemer office had its own honorary mayor. In addition, there was the post of mayor , while the city directors were also employed as administrative directors. The mayor with the longest term after World War II was Gustav Teves (CDU), who served for eight years between 1948 and 1956. The last official mayor was Hermann-Josef Geismann (CDU).
