Jochen Zellmann

Jochen Zellmann (born August 28, 1943 in Nordhausen ; † December 30, 2016 in Münster ) was a German painter .

life and work

From 1963 to 1964 Zellmann studied German literature , philosophy and art history in Mainz and from 1964 to 1969 painting and sculpture at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Karl Bobek , Erwin Heerich and Gerhard Hoehme . In 1968 he became a master student at Hoehme.

From 1970 to 1974 Zellmann worked in school in Essen and Düsseldorf. In 1974 he became a lecturer in painting at the Institute for Art Educators in Münster at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf . After early works in which he formed tight black lines into sweeping, brushstroke-like shapes, he turned to colored, abstract painting in the mid-1980s. “ Zellmann paints with oil paints, acrylic, Indian ink and plaster. He paints in broad strokes and finely displaced, sometimes with his fingers and the brush handle, in an unexcited, deliberate gestural primary tract [...] ” .

From 1979 Zellmann was a lecturer in painting at the Art Academy in Münster , and in 1981 he was appointed professor of painting there. In 1987 he was awarded the Villa Romana Prize . He also made many group and solo exhibitions that documented the artistic development of the Münster Art Academy.
