Oscar August Reuther (born October 20, 1880 in Hemer ; † August 5, 1954 in Heidelberg ) was a German building researcher .

Life

Oscar Reuther was born as the son of the businessman OA Reuther and studied architecture at the Technical University of Dresden from 1899 to 1904 after attending grammar school . Karl Weißbach and Cornelius Gurlitt were among his teachers . Gurlitt aroused Reuther's interest in architectural history and archeology. After graduating, he worked as an architect in Berlin, where he attended archaeological events at the university . In addition, he familiarized himself with the methods of photogrammetry at the Royal Measurement Institute . With this, Reuther demonstrated his interest in modern research methods early on.

From 1905 to 1912 he worked as an excavation architect for Robert Koldewey during the excavations in Babylon . In the seclusion of the excavation site, he learned not only the methods of archaeological building research but also discipline. In addition to his work on the excavation, Reuther collected material for his dissertation on The House in Baghdad and in other cities in Iraq , with which he received his doctorate in 1909 under Gurlitt in Dresden. During his travels between Berlin and Babylon, he was also able to visit other ancient sites, and twice architecture study trips took him to India . In the summer of 1913, Reuther worked for Theodor Wiegand on the excavation of the Heraion of Samos . With Wiegand he exchanged letters that were respectful, but also cheerful and later also slightly mocking. Reuther was also in the Orient during the First World War . He served as a liaison officer with the Pascha II formation in Syria , was a stage commander in Ras al-Ain and an employee of the German-Turkish monument protection command . Here he was able to complete building surveys in Baalbek and devote himself to his studies of Islamic architecture.

In 1920 Reuther succeeded Gurlitt at the chair for the history of architecture at the TH Dresden. From now on, teaching and publishing the collected research results became Reuther's most important tasks. In addition, he took part in the excavations in Heraion of Samos and in Ernst Kühnel's expedition to Ctesiphon again in 1923 under the direction of Ernst Buschor . In 1926 he was one of the founding members of the Koldewey Society . From 1932 to February 1934 Reuther was rector of the TH Dresden. In 1933 he became a member of the NSDAP. In November 1933, Reuther signed the German professors' confession of Adolf Hitler .

After the end of the war , Reuther and his family left Dresden in 1945 and moved to Heidelberg. In 1949, at the age of 69, after the death of Karl Wulzinger, he resumed teaching and was in charge of the Department of Building History until 1950.
