Michael Heilmann (born June 14, 1962 in Hof (Saale) ) is a German local politician (non-party) and full-time mayor of the town of Hemer in the Märkisches Kreis .

After completing secondary school in Rehau , he completed an apprenticeship as an electrical system installer and then attended the technical college in Hof. As a regular soldier , he was with the Bundeswehr (Air Force) for four years . He studied political science , economics and law at the University of Duisburg-Essen and spent a semester abroad at the University of Birmingham (UK).

After his studies he worked as a freelance lecturer . After taking on the upbringing of children as a househusband and father, he has been actively involved in local politics since 1993. He joined the Independent Voting Association (UWG) in Hemer. Since then he has been active in several municipal political bodies and supervisory boards , since 2004 in the City Council of Hemer and from 2004 to 2014 chairman of the social committee. Together with Gudrun Gille and Horst Riedel, he founded the Netzwerk Demenz Hemer e. V.

In the election for the mayor of the city of Hemer, Heilmann won the runoff election on February 14, 2016 with 81 percent of the votes cast. Since he left the UWG Hemer in 2018, he has been non-party. In October 2019, Heilmann announced that he would not run again as a candidate for mayor in the local elections on September 13, 2020.

Heilmann is married and has three children. He has lived in Hemer since 1990.
