The square marked the beginning or the end of the country road and is bounded by this at the southern end. To the north, Schmidttorstrasse, to the west, the promenade and, to the east, a street of the same name, the Taubenmarkt.

Origin of name

From 1880 to 1952 a poultry market was held here, where pigeons could also be bought. The square owes its name to this fact. The location was named this way before 1880, which suggests that poultry had been traded here for much longer.

history

With the erection of the Holy Trinity column in 1716 on the nearby main square , the pillory was moved from there to the pigeon market, which made it more important than a market. For a long time, the square was only accessible via the narrow Domgasse before a connection to the main square was created in 1861 by demolishing the Schmidtor . In the 20th century, the Taubenmarkt became a transfer point for various tram and bus routes. It is now not only the square in the city with the highest density of visitors, but also the third most frequented place in Austria with 236,000 pedestrians per week between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.

art

There is now a fountain in the center of the square. The classical work of art made of marble was originally on the promenade. Hermann Krackowizer created it in 1892 for the cash desk of the Sparkasse Upper Austria there . The building was renovated in 1952 and the so-called Sparkassenbrunnen was set up in 1979 in the middle of the Taubenmarkt.

City life

Due to the high level of traffic and its importance as a central hub for local passenger traffic, the pigeon market has become particularly important for city life. From here, the shops on the nearby country road can be reached quickly. The arcade at Taubenmarkt (entrance Palais Weißenwolff with atlases at the entrance portal) with upscale retail is located directly on the square. The McDonald’s branch on Taubenmarkt is also a meeting place for the young people . This branch was one of the first in Europe to introduce the Easy Order system - which enables 100% operator-free, purely electronic ordering. Also distinctive is the sausage stand in the center of the square, which is open late into the night and serves as a meeting point for night owls.
