As part of the formerly independent municipality of Frönsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia, Ispei has been part of the city of Hemer since January 1, 1975 . The settlement is located in the Stephanopel valley in the southeast of the city, between Stephanopel in the north and Heppingserbach in the south.
The name Ispei means "flood plain through which moving water flows".
Ispei was the location of a school for the community of Frönsberg for 145 years. In 1823, on the initiative of Pastor Friedrich Wilhelm Wulfert, a classroom with a teacher's apartment was set up in a small Kotten acquired for 500 Reichstaler . This meant that the children of the neighboring districts of Frönsberg, Stephanopel, Heppingserbach, Heppingsen , Heide and Hüingsen no longer had the long, poor way to school to Evingsen , Iserlohn , Ihmert or Sundwig or could even go to school. The first teacher at the newly founded school was Gottlieb Lührmann, son of an Iserlohn family of teachers. He had already completed a teachers' seminar in Soest , which was still unusual at the time . In the 1830s about 20 to 30 children attended the Protestant elementary school in Ispei. By 1870 the number of students was around 60 and the school was getting too small. In 1875 the community built a new school building. The school had the highest number of pupils in 1897 with 91 children. After the Second World War , the number of students decreased continuously. In 1966 the number had dropped to 48 children. In the course of the school reform in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1968, the Ispeier school was closed on July 31, 1968.
After it was subsequently used for village events and as a church, the building is now privately owned.
Events are now taking place in the village community center built in 2007. A fire station is integrated into the new event center , which has taken over the function of the historic fire station in Heppingsen.
From the beginning of 1950 until 1960 there was an outdoor swimming pool in the district. Workers from the Carl Rohländer company based in Heppingserbach had excavated the basin by hand. There were changing rooms and a diving board. The bath was fed by the Heppingser Bach . Since the community of Frönsberg could not hire a lifeguard, you swam at your own risk. The outdoor pool was unheated. Waning interest led to the deterioration of the bath, which was closed in 1960.
Personalities
The theologian Heinrich Schlier lived in Ispei between 1938 and 1959. During this period, among other things, his valuable translation and explanation of the “ Paul's letter to the Galatians ” was created.
