As part of the formerly independent municipality of Ihmert, Elfenfohren has been part of the town of Hemer since January 1st, 1975 . The settlement is located in the southwest of the city, just before the border with Evingsen . The farm with an attached restaurant goes back to the year 1813.

The origin of the name is not finally clear. According to an interpretation from 1885, the old name "Eilf-Fohren" stands for eleven furrows into which the country was divided. Alternatively, wafts of mist over the valley could be seen as a group of hovering elves.
