As part of the formerly independent municipality of Ihmert, Holmecke has been part of the town of Hemer in North Rhine-Westphalia since January 1, 1975 . The settlement is located away from the Ihmert valley between Ihmerterbach and Im Hasberg in a nature reserve .

The first agricultural farms in Holmecke are known as early as the beginning of the 18th century. In 1885 ten residents lived on two farms in Holmecke.

The district is known for the mother-father-child health clinic Univita Gut Holmecke . In the past there was a rustic inn in the main building, later the Christliche Ferien- und Bildungswerk e. V. from Karl-Friedrich Schumann organized leisure activities and events on the property until 1999.
