Johannes Kirisits (born November 8, 1985 in Sankt Veit an der Glan ) is a former Austrian ice hockey player who has spent his entire career at EC KAC in the Austrian ice hockey league . In 2014 he finally ended his professional career after surviving two cancers.
Career
Kirists spent his youth in the youth teams of the EC KAC . He made his debut in the EC KAC fighting team in the 2001/02 season under coach Lars Bergström . His career suffered a setback in 2004 when he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. In the 2004/05 season, the team and fans showed solidarity and wore his shirt number 13 on the chest of the jersey. Kirisits defeated the disease and returned to the squad of the fighting team in the following season. Since then he has been considered a regular player.
In the 2007/08 season, Johannes Kirisits won the election for EBEL YoungStar of the year ahead of Lukas Friedl ( EC Red Bull Salzburg ) and Christoph Ibounig ( EC KAC ). In 2013 he fell ill with leukemia again and therefore missed the entire 2013/14 season. He then ended his professional career and began studying civil engineering at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences . At the same time, he plays in the fourth highest (amateur) league for the EC Althofen, a club near his home town.
International
In the junior division, Kirisits took part in the U18 World Championships for Austria at the age of 15 in 2001 and also in 2002 and 2003 as well as in the U20 World Championship in 2003 in Division I. In 2004 he played the Austrian U20 in the top division.
He made his debut in the men's selection of the Alpine country on November 7, 2003 - one day before his 18th birthday - in a 1-1 draw against Italy in Briançon, France . Due to his cancer, however, he was used for the first time in 2010 at a world championship and rose with his team from Division I to the top Division I. An achievement that he was able to repeat in 2012 - the Austrians had since been relegated without him.
