Jan Muršak (born January 20, 1988 in Maribor , SR Slovenia ) is a Slovenian ice hockey striker who has been under contract with SC Bern in the National League since April 2018 .

Career

Jan Muršak began his career in 2002 with the U18 youth team at HDK Maribor , where he scored 89 points in 35 games within two years. Due to his good performance, he was promoted to the U20 juniors in the 2003/04 season and, at the age of 15, also played in the professional team of HDK Maribor in the Slovenian ice hockey league . The following year Muršak was already one of the most important players in the senior team and came in 24 league games on 16 goals and 29 assists , making him the second best scorer at HDK Maribor. In the summer of 2005 he moved to HC České Budějovice in the Czech U20 extra league and there, too, he impressed with 15 goals and 15 assists in 43 games.

The Detroit Red Wings selected Muršak in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round at position 182. He also moved to North America shortly after the NHL Entry Draft , but first joined the Saginaw Spirit from the Canadian Junior League OHL , which had pulled him 33rd in the first round of the CHL Import Draft that same year . He had a very good start to the season and was among the top ten scorers in the league with 45 points in the first 28 games, but eased somewhat towards the end and was fourth-best scorer among the rookies with 27 goals and 53 assists . After the end of the OHL season he signed an entry contract with the Detroit Red Wings and came to his first professional appearances in North America when he played all seven playoff games in the AHL for the Grand Rapids Griffins , the Red Wings farm team , and contributed two assists . In the 2007/08 season he returned but in the OHL and initially played again for the Saginaw Spirit, but was transferred to the Belleville Bulls over the course of the season within the league , who completed the regular season as the second best team. For Muršak, the season was a step backwards compared to the previous year, as he only got 64 points in 57 games. However, he found his way back to his old form in the playoffs and with 24 points was the second best scorer for the Bulls, who lost the OHL final against the Kitchener Rangers , but were still allowed to participate in the Memorial Cup tournament of the best Canadian youth teams. There they met again in the semi-finals against the Kitchener Rangers and were clearly defeated with 0: 9.

In the fall of 2008 Muršak took part in the training camp of the Detroit Red Wings and recommended himself for a place in the squad of the farm team from Grand Rapids. There he had difficulties adjusting to the speed and physical hardness in his first professional season. His offensive game suffered and it wasn't until the 29th game of the season that he scored his first goal. Due to its weaknesses, it was only used irregularly. In the seasons 2009/10 and 2010/11 he managed to increase his points yield at the Grand Rapids Griffins and Muršak was recommended for inclusion in the NHL squad of the Detroit Red Wings, for which he was on December 27, 2010 in Game against the Colorado Avalanche debuted in the NHL.

At that time, Jan Muršak was rated as a very good skater who could handle the puck very well. He also has qualities as a playmaker. Physically, he would still have to work on himself and would have to better control his occasional lack of discipline on the ice.

During the NHL lockout 2012 Muršak played for the HDD Olimpija Ljubljana and scored 48 points in 30 EBEL games. He then returned to the Griffins before his contract expired after the 2012/13 season. He was then obliged by Amur Khabarovsk from the Continental Hockey League , but already moved to league rivals HK CSKA Moscow at the turn of the year 2013/2014 . There he was one of the team's top scorers in his first two years before his performance waned during the 2016/17 season. Therefore, he did not receive a new contract and moved within the KHL to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod , which he left at the turn of the year 2017/18 to join the Frölunda HC from the Svenska Hockeyligan .

In April 2018, he and Adam Almqvist moved from Frölunda to SC Bern in the National League .

International

For Slovenia Muršak took part in the junior division in the U18 World Championships in Division I in 2005 and 2006 and in the U20 World Championships in Division I in 2006 , 2007 and 2008 . At the U20 World Cup in Division I, he was voted the best striker in Group B in 2008. In the senior division, he has been at the Division I World Championships in 2010 , when he was the tournament's second top scorer behind his compatriot Rok Tičar , and in 2014 in his country's squad. He rose to the top division with Slovenia. In 2014 he was voted the tournament's best striker. He played in the top division at the 2015 and 2017 World Championships . He also took part in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , where he achieved a surprising seventh place with the Slovenian team, and the Olympic qualification for the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang .
