The Spengler Cup 2005 ( French Coupe Spengler 2005 ) was the 79th edition of the competition of the same name and took place from December 26 to 31, 2005 in the Swiss climatic health resort of Davos . The ice rink there served as the venue . A total of 76,181 spectators attended the eleven tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 6,925 per game.

The first time it won the Metallurg Magnitogorsk , by an 8: 3 victory in the final match on the Team Canada won the tournament. Already in the qualification the Russians had won the game 2-1 in the penalty shootout . For Magnitogorsk it was the first success at the Spengler Cup after they failed in the final in 1999 against the German representative Kölner Haie . It was the first victory by a Russian team since 1991 , when the fall of the Iron Curtain ended the dominance of Soviet clubs in the 1980s. Last year's finalists HC Davos and HC Sparta Prague took the last two places in the qualification.

The Canadians Mark Beaufait and Steve Walker , both in the service of Eisbären Berlin , were the most successful players in the tournament with seven points , including two goals each. The Czech Josef Marha from HC Davos was honored as the most valuable player .

mode

The five participating teams initially played in a single round in the " everyone against everyone " mode , so that each team played four games. The two teams with the best points after completing the ten qualifying games finally determined the tournament winner in an additional game.
