Martin Tetsuya Kariya (born October 5, 1981 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (striker). He last played for HC Ambri-Piotta in the Swiss National League A . He is the younger brother of Paul and Steve Kariya .

Career

Like his older brothers, he plays as a left winger, but in contrast to them, he shoots with the right. His middle name Tetsuya comes from the fact that his father has Japanese ancestors. When he scored 14 goals in 39 games and made 50 points at the University of Maine , he was transferred to the Portland Pirates ( AHL ) and played three playoff games there. He did not score at that time and was transferred to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL). There he played 70 games and scored 8 goals and put forward 17 assists . The NHL scouts noticed him and he was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 2005/06 season .

During the lockout , Martin Kariya played in Japan for the Nikkō Ice Bucks and was able to achieve 18 points scorer in 15 games. In the following season, the management of Stjernen Hockey took him under contract. He made another step in the direction of the NHL with the change to the Espoo Blues , where he was top scorer of the SM-liiga 2006/07 .

For the 08/09 season the Canadians signed a one-year contract with the SCL Tigers in the National League A . After a season with the Latvian KHL team Dinamo Riga , Kariya returned to Switzerland in 2010, where he signed a two-year contract with HC Ambrì-Piotta . In 2011 he suffered a head injury that ultimately forced him to retire.
