In the summer of 2010 Skinner came to Europe and played a year in the Continental Hockey League before moving to the Iserlohn Roosters .
Career
Brett Skinner began ice hockey in his hometown of Brandon and played for the Brandon Wheat Kings from 1998 to 2000 in a Midget AAA league, the highest level for players between the ages of 15 and 17. There he was elected to the First All-Star Team after both seasons. In the 2000/01 season Skinner played for the Trail Smoke Eaters in the British Columbia Hockey League . There the offensively oriented defender received two further individual awards for his achievements. The next year he joined the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League and scored 47 points in 46 games. He was then voted USHL Defenseman of the Year and the First All-Star Team. In the 2002 NHL Entry Draft , the Vancouver Canucks selected him in the third round as a total of 68 players.
Then Skinner decided to study at the University of Denver and played there for the ice hockey team. In his first year he became the most successful scorer among all newcomers to his team. In 2003/04 increased Skinner in gates, templates, and points and was with the Pioneers , the American College Championship of National Collegiate Athletic Association win. In his third year, the Canadian achieved his greatest successes to date. After he and his team first won the championship of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and was elected to the First All-Star Team, the Pioneers were able to defend their title for the college championship last year. In addition, Skinner received two other individual awards.
On August 30, 2005, the Canadian signed his first professional contract with the Vancouver Canucks. They sent him to the Manitoba Moose farm team in the American Hockey League . At the Spengler Cup 2005 Skinner played for Team Canada and only failed in the final against the Russian club HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk . In five games he came up with one goal and three assists. On March 9, 2006, the Canucks Skinner transferred together with a second-round draft pick in exchange for Keith Carney and Juha Alén to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks . On loan, he stayed with the Moose until the end of the season and reached the division finals with them in the play-offs . In the 2006/07 season , the Anaheim Ducks sent Skinner to the AHL to the Portland Pirates and to the ECHL to the Augusta Lynx . After he was only a surplus defender in Portland , he moved to the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights in February 2007 . In July 2007 he signed a new one-year contract with the Ducks. Shortly before the start of the 2007/08 season , he was transferred to the Boston Bruins together with Nathan Saunders in exchange for Mark Mowers . Skinner played for the Providence Bruins in the AHL all year . This season he was finally able to use his potential and scored 47 points in 68 games. He was also nominated for the AHL All-Star Game. In July 2008, Skinner signed a one-year contract with the New York Islanders as a free agent . First he played again in the AHL for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers . After the Islanders struggled with many failures in October 2008, they called Skinner to their squad, which finally made his debut in the National Hockey League on October 27, 2008 in the game against the New York Rangers . After eleven games, he returned to Bridgeport . On January 13, 2009, the Islanders traded Skinner for Junior Lessard from the Atlanta Thrashers . Until the end of the season, however, the Canadian only ran for their AHL farm team, the Chicago Wolves . On July 8, 2009, Skinner received a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche . For the Avalanche, however, he did not play a game and was on the farm team at the Lake Erie Monsters for the entire season and was a regular player there.
In August 2010 he accepted an offer from Amur Khabarovsk from the Continental Hockey League . There he was one of four North Americans and came up with six points in 34 games. In July 2011 Skinner was signed by the Iserlohn Roosters from the German Ice Hockey League . In Iserlohn he should also take on offensive tasks according to his abilities and help build up the game. On December 15, 2011, the contract was dissolved during the current season and Skinner moved to Finland to Tappara Tampere .
