The Spengler Cup 1996 ( French Coupe Spengler 1996 ) was the 70th edition of the competition of the same name and took place from December 26th to 31st, 1996 in the Swiss climatic health resort of Davos . The ice rink there served as the venue .
It was won again by Team Canada , which won the tournament with a 6-2 victory in the final against the hosts HC Davos . Already in the qualification the Canadians had won the game 5: 4. Team Canada successfully defended the title it won the previous year and celebrated its sixth tournament success since 1984 . With the Rochester Americans from the American Hockey League , a North American franchise took part in the tournament for the first time . The Canadian Sylvain Turgeon was the most successful player in the tournament with seven points , including five goals.
mode
The five participating teams initially played in a single round in the " everyone against everyone " mode , so that each team played four games. The two teams with the best points after completing the ten qualifying games finally determined the tournament winner in an additional game.
