St. Viktor (Dülmen)
St. Viktor is the oldest church in Dülmen . It is located in the city center and is the only one within the former city walls, from which u. a. the Lüdinghauser Tor has been preserved.
history
The foundation in 780 goes back to the abbot Bernrad or Liudger and took place on a Saxon (later episcopal) main court. It not only counts as the original parish of Dülmen, but also as one of the oldest churches in the diocese of Münster .
The namesake and patron of the church is St. Viktor .
The consecration of a larger church, which was believed to be the first stone church, took place in 1074.
The building of the church was destroyed, rebuilt, renewed or rebuilt several times, but was always oriented towards the east, the place of sunrise.
The church got its current shape around 1500, but like large parts of Dülmen it was destroyed on March 21 and 22, 1945 and then rebuilt, with traces of the difficult reconstruction being visible.
The pen
Albert von Lethene, vicarius perpetuus zu Dülmen, was the initiator of the establishment of a collegiate foundation at the Church of St. Victor in Dülmen. Bishop Ludwig of Hesse confirmed this in a document dated January 11, 1323. Heinrich von der Lippe, Münster cathedral scholaster and archdeacon of Dülmen, approved the establishment. Initially five prebends were set up, a number of twelve was planned. In the year 1330 eight can be proven, in 1360 the number twelve was reached. Archdeaconate rights were transferred to the dean of the monastery. The former archdeacon now became provost of the monastery; the provost's office was always given to a canon of Münster. The provost and the bishop of Munster were now entitled to alternate the allocation of the prebends. A chaplain was entrusted with the pastoral care.
The monastery was finally repealed by a Napoleonic decree of November 14, 1811.
Equipment of the church

procession
In connection with the St. Viktor parish, a procession through the city center takes place on Easter Sunday morning, during which the incumbent mayor of the city of Dülmen carries the so-called plague cross. According to tradition, this tradition goes back to the plague year of 1382, when all the clergy in the city died from this plague, so that the Easter holidays could not be celebrated in the conventional way.
