Life

Origin and family

Numerous prominent and well-known personalities have emerged from the ancient Westphalian noble family von Galen , which is one of the most important in the Duchy of Münster . In the 16th century it partly sympathized with the  Reformation and later became Catholic again  . Clemens August Josef von Galen was born as the son of Wilhelm Ferdinand von Galen zu Assen and his wife Sophie Louise von Merveldt zu Westerwinkel (1730–1810) and grew up with his brother Ferdinand , his sister Maria (1752–1829, ∞ Clemens August von Ketteler) and his half-brother Clemens August Ferdinand , who died at the early age of 27. He married on May 30, 1775 in Havixbeck Reichsfreiin Mechtild Sophia von Twickel zu Havixbeck (1756–171?), Daughter of the Imperial Baron Clemens August von Twickel (1721–1792) and Sophia Bernhardina von Ledebur zu Perutz and Wicheln (1721–1781). The daughters Clara Thyka (* 1780, young †), Clara Franziska (* 1786, † 1809, canoness in Wietmarschen), Maria Anna (* 1788, young †), Franziska Carolina (* 1789, young †) and Sophia Ludovika von Galen (1779–1840, ∞  Maximilian Frederik Hendrik von Korff called Schmising ) and their son Clemens August Alexander (* 185, young †). After Mechtild's death, on August 16, 1792, he married Angela Anna Carolina von Ascheberg zu Venne (1773-1806), daughter of Johann Matthias Kaspar von Ascheberg zu Venne (1737-1818, Prussian district administrator) and Franziska Maria Carolina Josefa Ferdinanda in the Venne castle chapel von Etzbach zu Langen (1744–1821). The sons Johann Matthias and Ferdinand come from this marriage . His third marriage took place on September 13, 1810 in Münster with Katharina Franziska Friederike Straeter (1777-1840). The daughter Maria Theresa Johanna (* 1811, † 1834) was married to Caspar Maximilian Droste zu Vischering-Padberg . Clemens August was buried in the parish church of Dinklage and in 1837 was buried in the hereditary crypt of the Dinklage castle chapel.

Career and work

Already in 1752 and 1756, Clemens August was given the Galen family praise - with papal dispensation - in Osnabrück and Münster and remained in their possession until 1770 when he gave them to his brother Ferdinand Karl after the death of his father. In early January 1756 he received a tonsure and was prepared for a spiritual life. In 1769 he was sworn up to the knighthood of the Münster and on December 3rd of that year he was appointed drosten of the Vechta office. After the death of his father, he took the oath of office on January 27, 1770. He was the last Munster Drost in Vechta. In the same year Clemens August became treasurer . Following a training trip that took him to Austria, Italy, France, England and the Netherlands, he was first vice stableman on February 21, 1771, then in June 1775 stableman. His appointment to the Privy Council fell on May 27, 1775. He was promoted to Obersthofmarschall on May 13, 1780 .

In 1775 he bought the Assen estate from his indebted cousin Clemens August von Galen (1749-after 1782) .
