Life

Origin and family

Numerous prominent and well-known personalities have emerged from the ancient  Westphalian  noble family  von Galen , which is one of the most important in the  Duchy of Münster . In the 16th century it partially sympathized with the  Reformation , but later became Catholic again  . Wilhelm Goswin Anton von Galen zu Assen was born the son of  Franz Wilhelm von Galen zu Assen and his wife Ursula Helena  von Plettenberg-Lehnhausen (* 1654, † 1720), sister of  Prince-Bishop Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg  , and had four sisters: Anna Maria ( * 1672, ⚭  Franz Anton von Landsberg), Francelina (* 1680, ⚭ Franz Christoph von Hörde zu Störmede), Elisabeth Antonetta († 1715, canons in Nottuln) and Maria Theresia († 1727, canon in Nottuln, ⚭ Franz Otto von Weichs). His brother Franz Heinrich Christian (* 1679, † 1712) was canon in Münster and Worms,  Friedrich Christian  cathedral dean in Münster and Wilhelm Ferdinand heir and treasurer. He married on February 8, 1705 in Henrichenburg the heiress Anna Maria von Sythen (1686-1724). The daughter Anna Helena Maria Antonia Josepha Von Galen (* 1707, † 1739, ⚭ 1728 Christian Franz Dietrich von Fürstenberg ) emerged from the marriage.

Career and work

In 1693 Wilhelm Goswin Anton received the second family praise in Minden , which he renounced in May 1697 in favor of his brother Friedrich Christian . This was followed by a two-year course in Prague . On August 10, 1701 the revival to the knighthood of Münster took place. On May 12, 1716, he nominated his daughter Anna Helena for a prebend at Nottuln Abbey , which she gave to Maria Sophia Franzisca von Galen because of her marriage in 1728.

Inheritance disputes over the Sythen house

Before they got married, Wilhelm Goswin Anton von Galen and Anna Maria von Sythen signed an extensive marriage contract on September 6, 1704. After that, after Anna Maria's death in 1724, the eldest daughter Anna Helena Maria had inheritance claims. Nevertheless, Anna Maria's granddaughter from her second marriage, Wilhelmina Friderica von Westerholt zu Westerholt and Alst and their son Wilhelm, made (in vain) claims. Franz von Fürstenberg and Franz Egon von Fürstenberg were heirs to the Sythen family .
