August von Spee

August Wilhelm Konstantin Hubert Reichsgraf von Spee (born April 18, 1813 in Düsseldorf , † August 23, 1882 at Heltorf Castle ) was a German court official, manorial estate owner and knighthood functionary.

Origin and family

August von Spee was born in Heltorf as the son of Count Franz Graf von Spee and his wife Sophia von Merveldt (1786–1848). He had numerous siblings. On February 26, 1840, he married Franziska von Brühl (1818–1844) in Prague. The children Franz Friedrich (1841–1921, ∞ Anna Droste zu Vischering), Elisabeth (1842–1920, ∞ Treasurer Ferdinand Heribert von Galen ) and Franziska (1844–1847) resulted from the marriage. After Franziska's death, on July 20, 1850, he married Maria Anna von Galen (1826–1909), a sister of his son-in-law Ferdinand Heribert. The marriage resulted in numerous children: Anna Maria (1851–1925, ∞ Franz Xaver von Korff), Friedrich Matthias (1852–1892), Maria Theresia (1853–1878), Wilhelm Emmanuel (1855–1925, ∞ Melanie vin Waldersdorff) , Mathilde (1857–1860), Leopold Aloys (1858–1920, ∞ Leopoldine von Waldersdorff), Pilar (1860–1943), Franziska (1862–1945), Heribert Ferdinand (1863–1939, ∞ Maria Sidonia von Brühl), Friedrich Stephan (1865–1928), Ferdinand Anton (1866–1924, ∞ Leopoldina Sophie Maria von Arco), Agnes (1867–1950), Johannes (1869–1945) and Hermann Joseph (* 1872; † 1872).

Career

After attending grammar school in Düsseldorf, he studied law and camera science at the universities of Bonn and Berlin . In 1834 he became a member of the Corps Borussia Bonn . After the death of his father, he became the firstborn to inherit an extensive inheritance, including Heltorf Castle, where he subsequently also lived with his family. August Graf von Spee was the Royal Prussian Chamberlain , Castle Captain von Brühl , District Deputy and Knight Captain of the Rhenish Knighthood . As a district deputy , after Johann Heinrich Kauerz and before his younger brother Wilderich took up the job, from July 25, 1863 to March 14, 1864, he was responsible for the administration of the Düsseldorf district .
